The Flooding on the Northside:
By now most of you have heard or are hearing about the devastation and flooding here in central Texas. San Angelo was on the northwest edge and we live on the western edge of the enormous rainfall. We received anywhere from 14 - 21 inches of rain in just a few hours. This followed what had been a rainy few days. Our ground was saturated and the flooding ensued.
The water traveled the north side of town. Here we have 3 branches of the Concho river that come together. North, Middle and South - forming the Concho that leaves the San Angelo area on the north east end along the 306 Loop.
We live under the “O” of San Angelo on the map above. The flooding ran east (to the right) out the Concho River drainage. The Concho flows into the Colorado. The huge rain episode covered most of the south / central part of the state. The areas of Kerrville and along the Guadalupe River are horrific. A wall of 34 ft of water came down through there and it is a huge mess. This is all over the news as so many are missing from this area.
The final details won’t be out for days. The city of San Angelo and many others have already filed for disaster claims. The state of Texas as well. Greg Abbott Gov. filed for Federal Assistance. This is Summer’s - big camping, family weekend.
In the Mean Time:
The other half of the city was with out issue. All behaving and doing what anyone was on their way to do. No issues. There were normal activities all around. The brand new Lakehouse Pizza and Taproom opened on Lake Nasworthy - to rave reviews. The holiday weekend - boating, camping and family fun time in full swing. They are donating to the relief efforts rallying behind the victims of the flooding; a portion of the days monies from sales will support those in need.
I bring this up as we were there for lunch. Our house was shown to potential buyers at 2pm and we needed to get lunch. (We are listed for sale and in the process of purchasing another across town near the Golf course.) We were heading out to the golf course where the new facilities were being showcased and outdoor barbeque were both canceled. SACC is in the middle of renovations to the golf course and they wanted to unveil the new indoor practice facility. There was also a little fun tournament on the new 3 hole short practice greens that was canceled.
San Angelo is on the edge where the desert meets the greener areas of the state that experience more rain. San Angelo only receives 21 inches of rain a year and the last three - since we moved here have been very dry. We had received less than half the normal amount. South and East of us is the Hill Country of Texas; towards Fredericksburg (wineries and tasting rooms,) Kerrville. Here they receive much more rain - 32 inches a year.
We selected San Angelo because of the climate here. Just far enough east that we are not in tornado alley. Just far enough south that we don’t see much snow as Abilene (which is higher in elevation and why they get more.) Far enough west that we are out of the extreme humidity of the Texas Hill country. San Angelo is the largest city that is not on a major highway. I- 10 to the North and I-20 to our south. We are a population of 100,000. A college town, Western Heritage based and in the bible belt as it is called.
We have several reservoirs - Lake Nasworthy being home to the Speed Boat Races and such. This is an “Oasis” in the Desert. Dene loves the golf course - which is rated the best for a hundred (=/-) miles around.
The whole community is the type of place that will come together and support all in need. The stories are evolving even as I type. Facebook is full of local photos and those from the Kerrville area. Pray with me for those in need and still waiting to hear about their children.
Thank you to those who have reached out…….
